FEATURED PLANT

This orchid,Stanhopea is named after Philip Henry Stanhope, Earl of Stanhope, who was President of the Medico-Botanical Society of London from 1829 to 1837. Stanhopeas occur naturally throughout Central and South America and are pollinated by euglossine bees. There are 32 Stanhopea hybrids and the one in the Biology greenhouse is somewhat unusual in that the flowers have a very delicate apricot color with two black spots.
