COURSES USING GREENHOUSE FACILITIES



101 Introductory Biology

Number of students: 800

Materials Provided: Students use plants to demonstrate principles of experimental design and hormone action. A flower and fruit lab depends on materials provided by the greenhouses.



103 Plant Biology

Number of students: 125

Materials Provided: Labs are designed around living materials that illustrate aspects of the plant kingdom, evolution, growth and development, as well as anatomy and morphology.



104 General Botany

Number of students: 75

Materials Provided: Selected plants are used during the demonstration sections.



105 Biology of Social Issues

Number of students: 350

Materials Provided: Teosinte plants are compared to domesticated maize.



266 New England Flora

Number of students: 24

Materials Provided: To supplement field trips, examples of greenhouse-grown plants are examined every week.



280 Evolution

Number of students: 100

Materials Provided: Living representatives of major plant groups are used and greenhouse tours are arranged.



283 General Genetics

Number of students: 100

Materials Provided: Principles of genetics are presented by providing mutant plants and by using plants to illustrate Mendelian ratios and the frequency of natural mutations.



421 Plant Ecology

Number of students: 35

Materials Provided: Certain plants are used for demonstrations. Plant competition experiments are performed in the greenhouse.



485 Aquatic Vascular Plants

Number of students: 25

Materials Provided: Greenhouse plants are used to supplement those collected during field trips.



504 Plant Morphology

Number of students: 24

Materials Provided: The subject matter of the course depends on the diversity of the plant collection. Major features of morphology are studied using whole plants and by dissection of fresh materials at all stages of their life cycles.



510 Plant Physiology

Number of students: 85

Materials Provided: Greenhouse plants are used to demonstrate aspects of growth and development.



511 Experimental Plant Physiology

Number of students: 24

Materials Provided: Many of the laboratories, especially those connected with water transport and growth and development rely on greenhouse-grown plants.



524 Coastal Plant Ecology

Number of students: 50

Materials Provided: Plants from the greenhouses are used for demonstrations.



526 Plant Geography

Number of students: 25

Materials Provided: Lectures are supplemented with plants from the greenhouses.



581 Angiosperm Systematics

Number of students: 15

Materials Provided: Many plant species from the extensive collection are used to illustrate principles of evolutionary biology and phylogenetics.



597C Plant Evolution

Number of students: 20

Materials Provided: The the greenhouse collection provides students the opportunity of seeing first-hand the full diversity of land plants, ranging from liverworts to angiosperms.



597D Cryptogamic Botany

Number of students: 12

Materials Provided: The greenhouse supplies non-vascular plants, primarily liverworts, for this course.
